Taiwan to host business conference in Addis Ababa

Posted by Ethio Tribune on June 21, 2013

42 Taiwanese businesses are in Ethiopia to explore business opportunities in the country. They will meet managers of companies dealing in ICT, solar  panel systems, food and textiles, among others. These managers will have the opportunity to meet with the Taiwanese delegates to discuss opportunities for partnerships at sessions to be held at the Hilton Hotel.
The conference follows last year’s visit by almost 30 Taiwanese firms to Addis Ababa, with a focus on clothing manufacturers. In 2012 Taiwan announced that it has no plans to open a trade centre in Ethiopia, as it already has a similar centre in Kenya and the majority of trade between the two countries takes place online.

Taipei has encouraged Ethiopian businesses to approach the centre in Nairobi to discuss opportunities, if trade between the two countries increases in future.Taiwan exported almost three million dollars’ worth of goods to Ethiopia and imported three and a half million dollars’ worth during the first 10 months of 2012. It did far more direct trade ($18.3m) with Djibouti, with the majority of goods destined for Ethiopia. Taiwan’s GDP was $430 billion, with a real annual growth rate of 10.88 percent and a Per capita GDP of $18,588 in 2010.
Its main economy is the service industry, accounting for 67.1 percent of GDP, followed by manufacturing at 31.3 percent.
